This month, we participated in the Bristol Lunar New Year Market in southwest England, joining local Hongkongers in celebrating the Lunar New Year while also raising awareness about labour rights in the UK. The market was bustling with people, filled with festive cheer as the God of Fortune made an appearance and a lion dance performance captivated the crowd. Stalls lined the venue, selling nostalgic Hong Kong street food and handmade crafts, bringing a strong sense of home to many attendees.
Many Hongkongers who have relocated to the UK are highly concerned about their labour rights and eagerly participated in our talk, raising numerous questions.
The most frequently asked questions included: Are sick leaves paid? What rights do agency workers have? Can employers dismiss staff at will during probation? These concerns highlight the labour challenges Hong Kongers face after moving to the UK. Many worry about their rights being unprotected and are unfamiliar with the local trade union system and grievance procedures. At the event, we provided explanations to help attendees better understand their rights, while also encouraging them to stay informed, advocate for fair labour conditions, and stand up for their rights.
