Summer in Hong Kong is more than a holiday season. Summer in Hong Kong is a time for protests and showcasing the power of the people. From the 4 June vigil to the 1 July annual rally, people in Hong Kong take to the streets and express their love for freedom and justice. However, since the enactment of the National Security Law three years ago on the 30 June 2020, these summer traditions have become almost impossible.
But we are not giving in.
Earlier this month, our executive director, Christopher Mung, joined the 4 June rally in London. Next month, we will kick off an exhibition tour “Be Water-Persist” starting in Sheffield and then across England. We will also work with local trade unions to hold labour rights talks for Hong Kongers in the UK. If you are interested in co-organising one of these, please let us know.
Hong Kong trade unionists in exile – How are they doing?
Many Hong Kong trade unionists have been forced to fled the city as a result of the crackdown under the Hong Kong National Security Law. We interviewed some of them in our new series “Hong Kong diaspora trade unionists”. The series is currently only available in Chinese. International Solidarity
Attending GMB Congress
HKLRM’s Executive Director, Christopher Mung, attended GMB’s 34th Congress in Brighton this month (you can read his full speech here). In the congress, we also met Ivanna Khrapko, the Chairwoman of Youth council of Federation of trade unions of Ukraine. From Hong Kong to Ukraine, we must stand as one to fight back authoritarianism.
Upcoming event: Cfdt, CGT and FO co-host conference about Hong Kong
On 29 September, Cfdt, CGT and FO will co-organise the conference “Hong Kong under National Security Law: state of play of human and trade union rights” in Paris. Christopher Mung and the former vice-chair of the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance, Ivan Law will speak at the conference. Learn more and register here.
