Many Hong Kongers in the UK want to work as care workers in care homes, community care services and the live-in care sector. This month, we co-organised a webinar with UNISON and the West Midlands Hongkonger Support CIC called ‘What is it like to work as a Care Worker in the UK?’ Tai Shing, a care worker in the UK, recounted his experience entering the industry and explained the industry’s hidden norms. The UNISON trade union representative explained labour rights in the UK.
Unison’s West Midlands regional representative provided an overview of the healthcare industry, including entry requirements, benefits, career paths, and training options. He also showcased the services offered by Unison, one of the largest public service unions. Tai Shing, a practitioner in the field, also discussed the highs and lows of his job. He emphasised that, while the entry standards for healthcare are not very stringent, having compassion and a sense of duty is vital. It is critical to understand the needs of service users and provide adequate care. Tai Shing also encouraged Hong Kongers to speak out against unfair treatment and not suffer in quiet.
