Who are we?
Hong Kong Labour Rights Monitor is a UK-based NGO run by independent trade unionists, labour rights activists, and researchers with a special focus on Hong Kong’s labour rights issues.
We speak up for workers in Hong Kong and amplify their voices across the world. Our work focuses on three areas: research, analysis and advocacy. Learn more about our battle for Hong Kong labour rights on the global front.
New Report: Hong Kong Trade Union Movement under the National Security Law
Hong Kong’s independent trade union movement faces unprecedented suppression under the city’s draconian National Security Law (NSL).
Our latest report “Hong Kong Trade Union Movement under the National Security Law: Two years into the authoritarian rule” documented the authorities’ relentless attacks to silence and criminalize the city’s once-thriving independent labour movement.
Advocacy Efforts
UN advocacy
In early July, our Executive Director Siu-Tat Mung brought our advocacy efforts to the United Nations. He presented our report to United Nation experts and delegations to the UN Human Rights Committee and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Read more about his trip to Geneva.
Connect global trade unions
In April and June, we went to the Netherlands and France to connect with the labour unions there. Read Mung’s speech to the French Democratic Federation of Labour (CFDT) here. Our story also appeared in the Trouw, one of the bigger national newspapers in the Netherlands.
Free labour unionists behind bars
Five speech therapists from the General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists are charged with sedition over a series of children’s books. The Hong Kong court has ruled on prima facie evidence against them. Their case is adjourned until 18 July.
