In this issue: Article 23 bring HK under authoritarian rule | Hong Kong Diaspora | HK Labour Rights Newsflash | Event Recap
The authorities weaponised the Hong Kong National Security Law to eliminate deviant opinions and undermine civil society to the point of chilling free expression. The four-week public consultation on Article 23 legislation is superficial. We believe that the government intends to use Article 23 legislation to infiltrate control into all levels of society, including foreign organisations and online platform activities, thereby pushing Hong Kong towards authoritarian governance.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buVcglXkIuo
Apart from signing the joint statement with other overseas civil organisations and expressing our views through online media, we plan to approach trade unions in the UK and overseas and explain the impact of Article 23 legislation on the formation of trade unions, freedom of association, and solidarity with international trade unions.
Let’s continue to bring the voice of Hong Kong workers to the international community.
Hong Kong Diaspora
Tai Shing an experienced social worker, helps HKers adjust to life in the UK
Tai Shing, an experienced social worker who advocates for the rights of underprivileged people in Hong Kong, decided to leave for the UK after the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law. Tai Shing, who has always criticised the government policies on the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme and subdivided housing, now fears his life in the city due to the widespread forced dissolution of civic organisations. Now, using his frontline experience in supporting the new immigrants in Hong Kong, he is helping newly arriving Hongkongers adjust to life in the UK.

Event Recap
Lunar New Year Market and Labour Rights Talk for Hongkongers
In the Year of the Dragon, we visited the Lunar New Year Market in Birmingham and Guildford. The Lunar New Year Market in Birmingham, organised by West Midlands HKers Support CIC, attracted a larger number of Hongkongers. While the vendors showcased various products with unique Hong Kong features, we presented an exhibition of Hong Kong’s independent trade union movement.
This month, we collaborated with the UK Welcomes Refugee to hold a webinar on labour rights in the UK, educating Hongkongers in the UK about their employment rights and encouraging them to join trade unions to better integrate into society. If you would like to co-host an event in your area, please email us at [email protected] !
That’s a wrap for this month. We’d appreciate it if you could share this email with your network. It would help us reach a wider audience and increase awareness of #HKLabourRights. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for more updates.
